Travel-document requirements depend on citizenship, destination, transit points, trip purpose, and other circumstances. A passport that has not expired is not automatically sufficient for every itinerary. Start with official requirements for the actual traveler and route.
Build a route-specific checklist
List every country where entry or transit rules may apply, including connections. For each traveler, check the relevant government or embassy guidance for passport validity, visas or electronic authorizations, and any additional documents. US citizens can use the State Department's destination information as a starting point and confirm requirements with the destination's authorities.
Write the source and date beside each answer. Do not apply one country's remaining-validity rule to every country, or assume that a previous trip proves eligibility for a new one. Requirements can change.
Compare the documents with the booking
Check names and other identifying details for consistency. Confirm that an authorization, when required, covers the intended purpose and dates. For travel with children or other special circumstances, consult the destination-specific requirements early enough to resolve missing documents.
If a point is unclear, ask the relevant authority or carrier using a precise description of the route and traveler. Keep the response, but recognize that a customer-service message is not a substitute for an official entry decision.
Prepare for loss without exposing the originals
The State Department recommends copies of travel documents kept separately from the originals and a copy with a trusted person. Store digital copies securely and make sure you can access essential information if your phone is lost. Avoid placing passport images in a publicly shared folder.
Recheck official requirements before departure and carry the originals required for travel. Copies help with recovery and reference; they generally do not replace a required original passport or authorization at a border.
