Before Resetting Your Network, Write Down What Has Stopped Working

Narrow a connection problem with a short evidence check so you can choose the right support instructions and preserve useful settings.

When a page will not load, first establish what has failed. One unavailable website, one disconnected laptop, and a household-wide outage call for different next questions.

Make a three-line problem note

  1. Record which device and application are affected, plus the approximate time the problem began.
  2. Check whether another ordinary website loads on that device. Avoid entering sensitive information during a connectivity experiment.
  3. Check whether another device on the same network has the same problem, if one is available.

Write what you observed without guessing the cause. A Wi-Fi connection indicates a connection to a wireless network; it does not guarantee that the network has working internet access.

Match the action to the equipment

Check your provider's outage information and the instructions for your exact modem or router. A restart and a reset may have very different effects. Read the device documentation before pressing a recessed button or choosing an option that promises to restore defaults.

For Windows connection problems, Microsoft provides a sequence of checks. Its network-reset step removes installed network adapters and settings before reinstalling adapters with defaults. It is a later troubleshooting step, and it may require additional networking software to be set up again. Do not treat it as the first harmless button to try.

Hand support a useful record

If the problem remains, add any error text and the results of actions you actually completed. Mention whether a restart helped temporarily. Do not send account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, or screenshots containing private account details in an ordinary support message.

This small record can keep a support conversation focused. It also reduces the chance of repeatedly changing unrelated settings and losing track of the original problem. If the network belongs to your employer or someone else, contact its administrator before making configuration changes.
