To request a post-purchase price adjustment, check the retailer's current policy, match the lower offer to your exact item, and provide the original purchase through the specified support route. Treat the request as pending until the retailer confirms the decision and any resulting credit appears.
A lower price elsewhere does not automatically create an adjustment entitlement. Retailers define eligible offers, products, timing and evidence differently. This guide organizes a request under an available policy; it does not promise that every purchase qualifies or replace any separate consumer rights that apply to a faulty transaction.
Establish which policy belongs to your purchase
Start with the retailer shown on your receipt and the channel where you purchased. A marketplace partner, a physical store and the platform itself may have different arrangements. Record the purchase date, order reference and actual seller before reading a general price-match page.
Open the current official policy rather than relying on a search snippet, a past holiday promotion or a remembered competitor list. Policies can change. An older page may describe offers that are no longer eligible even when the search result still looks convincing.
Target's current price-match guidance is an example: its rules identify eligible Target or Target Plus situations, exact-item requirements and accepted evidence. Read the relevant branch for the seller on your purchase, rather than assuming a general marketplace name settles it.
Best Buy's guarantee has its own conditions and exclusions. Do not transfer a deadline or competitor rule from one retailer to another. Use the policy attached to the actual request.
Confirm that the request is within scope
Find the post-purchase adjustment provision, if one exists. A policy allowing a match at checkout may not offer the same process after purchase. Check the applicable request window and any product or membership differences without assuming that an estimated shipping date changes the rule.
If the purchase date is unclear, locate the order and receipt rather than selecting the date most favorable to the request. If the policy does not make its timing clear, ask support which date and provision it uses. Preserve that answer with the case.
Check exclusions that affect the actual offer: product condition, clearance, bundle, service charges, membership requirements, marketplace seller or another promotion. You do not need to copy the entire policy into a note. Record the few conditions relevant to your item and any uncertainty you need support to resolve.
If the policy plainly excludes the situation, a polite goodwill inquiry is different from claiming the policy guarantees an adjustment. State which you are asking for. That keeps the request accurate and avoids a long dispute built on an inapplicable rule.
Match the item at the detail level
Compare model, edition, size, color, quantity and condition, as relevant. Two listings can use the same product-family name and photo while differing in included accessories or warranty arrangements.
The product listing comparison provides a method for this identity check. For a price adjustment, the goal is to show that the offer satisfies the retailer's exact-item requirement, not merely that another product performs a similar job.
Watch multipacks and bundles. A lower total for one unit is not the same offer as a two-pack, and a bundle with a gift card may be subject to separate restrictions. Do not divide a bundle price and present the result as though a seller offers the individual product at that price.
If you find a mismatch, record it and stop describing the offer as identical. You can continue searching for a qualifying offer or ask support about the specific difference. Concealing the variant or condition will not produce a reliable request.
Use evidence the retailer can actually verify
Keep the live product link and the original receipt or order number available. Note the selected variant and any location or account setting that affects the displayed price. A search result's price can be stale or refer to another option.
Target, for example, says its staff verify a current price and do not accept screenshots or pictures as the price-match proof. A screenshot can still help you remember what you saw, but it does not replace the evidence a particular policy requires. Follow the current instructions rather than assuming every saved image is sufficient.
For a digital advertisement, use the retailer's accepted version and make sure the offer is current. If membership or a selected store affects the price, identify that condition honestly. Do not edit an image, omit a restriction or change the selected variant to make an offer look eligible.
Your saved checkout terms help show the original price and promotions. Keep them alongside the new offer so that support can see whether the purchase already included a discount or benefit relevant to the policy.
Calculate the question before calculating the refund
Write the original item price after relevant purchase discounts, the new displayed item price, and any differences in quantity or included services. Do not subtract the new item price from an order total that also includes unrelated goods, delivery and tax.
Consider a fictional receipt with a lamp at 80, another item at 20, and delivery at 6 before tax. A current lamp offer is 68. The item-price difference is 12, not 38. The 106 order subtotal includes things outside the lamp comparison.
If the original lamp received a 10 item discount, its effective item price was 70, so the simple difference from 68 is 2. Whether the retailer combines or replaces promotions is a policy question; the calculation merely shows why the original receipt matters.
Do not invent the final tax or credit treatment. Ask the retailer to state the approved adjustment and how it will be returned. Keep the item-price comparison separate from the final posted amount, which may reflect the applicable transaction details.
Submit one clear request
A concise message could read:
I purchased [exact item] on [date], order [reference]. The current offer at [official link] shows [price] for [matching variant and quantity]. Could you check whether this purchase qualifies for a post-purchase adjustment under your current policy? My receipt shows [original relevant item price].
Provide the evidence requested through the retailer's official channel. Keep full payment credentials, account passwords and unrelated purchases out of attachments. If the receipt includes other personal details, use the provider's secure route and send only what is required.
Save the case reference and response. If staff ask for additional evidence, add it to the same case when possible. Starting several parallel requests can make it difficult to know whether one approval refers to another pending conversation.
If the lower price may change soon, submit through the available official process promptly. Record when you submitted it, but do not assume submission preserves eligibility beyond what the policy says. Ask how the retailer handles a changing offer if that becomes relevant.
Resolve a refusal by identifying the actual reason
If the request is declined, ask which condition was not met. The answer may be timing, product identity, seller, condition, promotion or unverifiable evidence. Each leads to a different next step.
For a factual mismatch, correct the record with the relevant evidence. For example, if support reviewed the wrong model, point to the exact model on both the receipt and offer. If the policy excludes the actual purchase, repeated messages with the same information are unlikely to change the underlying issue.
Keep a factual purchase timeline if the decision appears inconsistent with the written policy and you seek review. Quote or summarize only the relevant provision and explain the discrepancy. Do not recast a valid original charge as unauthorized because a discretionary adjustment was refused.
Close an approval against the payment record
An approval should identify the amount, method and expected processing information. Ask whether you should expect a credit to the original payment method, another permitted form of reimbursement or a different transaction adjustment. Do not infer that from a generic “resolved” status.
Use the refund reconciliation method to match the actual credit to the approval. If the amount differs, compare the retailer's explanation and receipt before escalating; tax or promotion treatment may need clarification.
Once the adjustment is received, mark the case complete and retain the revised receipt or confirmation. If no adjustment is due, record the explanation and remove the reminder. The useful result is a request supported by the right evidence and a clear outcome, not an indefinite expectation that every later sale must change your earlier purchase.
