Before returning a urine sample, check the identification and delivery instructions while there is still time to correct a problem. A container without reliable context can create an avoidable repeat visit.
Before collection: match the kit to the order
Use the container supplied or approved for the test. Check any preprinted name and other identifiers against your paperwork. If they do not match, stop and ask staff for help. Do not collect into a mislabeled container and plan to sort it out later.
Read whether the order requires clean catch, first-morning urine, or another collection method. Do not infer the method from the shape of the cup. Ask what date and time information must be recorded and where it belongs.
After collection: protect the sample
Close the lid securely without touching the inside of the container or lid. Follow the kit's handling instructions. If the sample spills, the container is damaged, or contamination may have occurred, contact the laboratory instead of transferring it into a household jar.
Do not remove liquid already supplied in a collection container unless the instructions specifically tell you to. Some tests use preservatives; the laboratory should explain what the container contains and how to handle it.
At handoff: verify the destination
Return the sample to the designated place. If collected at home, follow the stated storage conditions and delivery window. Refrigeration, room-temperature storage, and transport timing are test-specific decisions, not interchangeable defaults.
Keep your order confirmation separately from the specimen and ask how receipt or rejection will be communicated. Delivery to a desk does not itself establish that analysis has been completed.
If the laboratory requests another sample, ask what needs to change before trying again. The purpose of this checklist is a correctly identified, appropriately handled specimen. It does not interpret urinary symptoms or determine whether the ordered test is medically appropriate.
